And that’s all I know; The value of life

Interestingly, as I was chatting with Lovepreet whilst he was Ubering me back to the Melbourne airport he noted that after moving here three years ago he’d never been back to Punjab.

I found this interesting as most Sikhs I’ve spoken to recently always make regular trips back to the mothership.

Anyway… Lovepreet ¬†mused on and on about many topics about the homeland when I asked my usual broad strokes open question on his home…. as his voice faded into the background I noticed his CD player was on silent … The title of the song playing on silent being something like boo Chau coo koo…. I wondered if this was the sort of screeching Indian music one normally hears in a Hindi shop or nice Italian… his phone rang, also, ¬†notably also on silent …

Lovepreet is not your normal Punjabi … I mused quietly to myself..

The topic turned to cars and traffic and I asked… are there any rules or law on the road? He said no, and joked the sole purpose of the police was to stop you and fleece 200 rupees off you. Apart from that, no policing exhisted.

He then said something which stopped my thoughts on the desolated look Melbourne has… he said, ‘there is no value for life… the only value for a mans life is the value you pay for it’… that value he explained was the amount of money you need to pay if you are caught killing someone…

Lovepreet articulated this value with stunning accuracy and insight, I thought… the value .. I thought.. is what you, pay… we live in a vast and different world. One, which is very different from Melbourne in contrast to India…

One in which I’m certain Lovepreet traded his waste level hair and turben for…

and that’s all I know..
